Bashara accused of solicitation, intimidation

Bob Bashara’s aunt, Gwenn Samuel, sits Wednesday with defense attorney David Griem in 36th District Court in Detroit. (Macomb Daily staff photo by David Dalton)
Bob Bashara was not only charged Wednesday with trying to hire someone to kill Joe Gentz, but Bashara allegedly inquired about having other witnesses killed and tried to intimidate potential witnesses, all related to his wife’s murder case.
Those are big reasons why Wayne County prosecutors asked for a $25 million bond and presumably a big part of why Bashara got a $15 million bond, cash or surety, to post to be released from the Wayne County Jail...
...
Griem after the hearing outside the courthouse accused the alleged hit man of framing his client. “This particular charge is all going to revolve around the individual who went to Bob Bashara and set him up,” Griem said. “I think the evidence is going to show that he was set up.”
...
Attending the arraignment were Bashara’s aunt, Gwenn Samuel, accompanied by her unnamed daughter and an unidentified young man.

Sources: Bashara paid Detroit store owner for jail house hit

---- TEXT & VIDEO (8:55) ----
DETROIT (WJBK) -
It was at Steve's Furniture and Appliances in Detroit near the border of Grosse Pointe Park where Bob Bashara allegedly ordered a jail house hit on Joe Gentz, the man who claims he killed Jane Bashara and his former boss, Bob, hired him to do it.
"The evidence is going to show that he was set up," said David Griem.
Or was he? We've learned behind the store's walls Bob Bashara sought out the owner, Steve, to come up with a plan to kill Gentz in jail, but Steve went to the authorities. Sources say the two would meet a few times over a two week period this month. Steve would act as the middle man. Bashara would eventually pay him $2,000 to get the job done, someone behind bars to take Gentz out, but what Bashara did not know, he was being recorded.

Today's new "one" from Bob Bashara's family FB page:
"We can only help make our lives and our world more peaceful, when we ourselves feel peace. Peace already exists within each of us, if we only allow ourselves to feel its comfort. Peace of mind begins when we stop thinking about how far we have to go, or how hard the road has been, and just let ourselves feel peace."

WDIV's Homegrown Star Leaving For WNBC In New York
June 20th, 2012, 6:10 PM
Marc Santia, the classic local boy who made good, is leaving Detroit for a job as a reporter at WNBC-TV in New York.
His last day at Channel 4 is next Friday.
"I'm very excited," Santia said Wednesday. "It's a great opportunity. But it's tough. This is home.
As at WDIV, Santia will specialize in crime and courts at WNBC. He laughed when it was pointed out New York, statistically, is a much safer city than Detroit.
Santia graduated from Roseville High School and Wayne State University, and started at WDIV as an intern in 1998. He has worked there as a production assistant, writer, special projects producer and Sky 4 reporter. In recent years he has served as an investigative reporter for the Local 4 Defenders squad.
Among the stories he has covered are the murders of two middle-class suburban women, Jane Bashara and Tara Grant, whose husband, Stephen Grant, is serving a long prison sentence for her murder and dismemberment. After Hurricane Katrina, he spent two weeks in New Orleans, reporting on the efforts of a relief team of Wayne County Sheriff's deputies.
In New York, Santia can tell them about the time he was shot at while on a story at his Detroit station.
As he relates on the WDIV web site, "We were flying over a hostage situation in Lincoln Park. "The police asked for our help to find a gunman in a high rise tower. We flew close to the building and in our monitor spotted the man, who aimed his rifle and shot at us!"
Lucky for WNBC, the gunman missed.

Bashara arrested
June 21, 2012

...
According to Griem, he and the Park police had an agreement if Bashara was going to be charged in the murder of his wife, police would notify Griem, who would accompany Bashara to the station to turn himself in.
"But apparently that was only the case if he was going to be charged in Jane's murder," Griem said. "He has not been arrested for the murder of Jane. I did not anticipate this."
Griem said he expected his client to be arraigned on Wednesday in Detroit's 36th District Court. He also said he doesn't believe Bashara will be released on bail.
"Oh, there will not be any bail in this case, and he is going to be in jail for a long time," Griem said.
Shortly after Bashara's mother left police headquarters, his aunt, Gwenn Samuel, arrived. She spoke briefly with Griem, before returning to her car, where she admitted his arrest came as a surprise to everyone.
"This is such an injustice," she said of her nephew's arrest. "This has destroyed his life. We firmly believe he did not have anything to do with Jane's death."
She said she did not believe the Bashara children knew about the arrest, and she was on her way to be with Nancy Bashara.
"You are talking to someone who loves him very much," she said. "The truth will come out."
While members of the Bashara family were shocked by his arrest, a neighbor of Bob Bashara's on Middlesex said she was relieved.
"I have to say I'm going to be sleeping better tonight knowing he is in jail," she said on the condition her name not be used.
"Jane Bashara was a lovely person and it has not been easy watching him go about his business every day," she said. "This has been difficult for us because at first we supported Bob, but now we feel betrayed."

A Blast at Rotary's the Winter Blast
Rotarians from all around District 6400 came together to assist in the collection of books, clothing and food for the 3-Million Pound Challenge at the Winter Blast in Detroit, February 12-14. Under the leadership of Grosse Pointe Rotary President Bob Bashara and GP Rotarian Mike Carmody, the group collected more than 420,000 pounds in a 3-day period. A great (chilly) time was had by all!

Attorneys for Gentz, Bashara fight over filings
11:16 PM, June 30, 2012
By Joe Swickard
Detroit Free Press
Defense attorney Susan Reed is asking that Bob Bashara’s lawyer be held in contempt of court for issuing unauthorized subpoenas for the work records of her client, handyman Joe Gentz, who’s accused of killing Bashara’s wife.
The motion was filed Friday in Detroit’s 36th District Court and asks for Griem to testify under oath about any material he got through improper subpoenas — action the motion labeled “criminal abuse of process.”
“David Griem had no authority to do what he did,” Reed said Saturday. “This is just not something that you can let go. He needs to be held accountable.”
Griem sent out subpoenas in May, saying he was seeking information about Gentz for a pending criminal case against Bashara. However, there was no pending criminal case when he sent out the subpoenas and Michigan court rules prohibit private attorneys issuing subpoenas when there is no case.
The subpoenas came to light when one of the recipients contacted Reed.
Told of Reed’s motion Saturday evening, Griem said her action came without warning. He also said it was her second attempt to have him punished and that she’s formed an “unholy alliance” with Wayne County assistant prosecutor Lisa Lindsey.
He said Reed is “trying to get a second bite of the apple.”
“There’s already been a hearing on this issue and I guess she didn’t like the outcome,” he said.
Griem was called before Presiding Judge Timothy Kenny of the Wayne County Circuit Court criminal division in June and was told to inform anyone who got a subpoena not to honor it.
On Saturday, Griem said Reed sat near the prosecutors during the hearing before Kenny, an indication, he said, of the forces arrayed against Bashara.
“This is tag-team match where they take turns beating up on Bob Bashara,” he said.
Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, said, “There is no legal authority for Griem to issue a subpoena in a nonexistent case. Reed is certainly acting appropriately as Gentz’s attorney to protect his rights by filing the motion.” She had no comment on Griem’s allegations that Reed is aligned with the prosecutor’s office. No date has been set for any action on Reed’s motion.
The subpoena fracas flared just days before Bashara’s arrest Monday on charges he was trying to recruit a hitman to kill Gentz in the Wayne County Jail, where is being held on murder and conspiracy charges.
Investigators have said Gentz told them Bob Bashara hired him to kill his wife, Jane Bashara, who disappeared from her Grosse Pointe Park home in January.
The next day, she was found strangled in the back seat of her Mercedes-Benz SUV that was ditched in an east side Detroit alley.
Bashara has not been charged with the killing but was termed a person of interest early in the investigation.
Griem said Bashara’s arrest for solicitation to murder undercuts any bargaining leverage Reed hoped to use to get Gentz a deal in exchange for his testimony against Bashara.
“Her negotiations took a terrible hit when Bob Bashara got arrested because he’s now facing a life felony and they don’t need Joe Gentz’s testimony,” Griem said.
Gentz is undergoing a second evaluation to see if he is mentally competent to stand trial. A state evaluation found him competent and Reed requested a private evaluation of his mental condition.

Dominantrix Says Gentz Was Bashara’s ‘Sex Slave’
July 2, 2012 10:34 AM
DETROIT (Talk Radio 1270) Dominatrix Lady Giana, who was the first person to reveal Bob Bashara’s alleged sex dungeon and ties to the world of sadomasochism, called the Charlie Langton Talk Radio 1270 show Monday with new revelations.
She thinks handyman Joe Gentz, who allegedly killed Jane Bashara at her husband’s request in exchange for some cash and a car, was involved in Bashara’s world as his own personal “sex slave.” Bashara was arrested and charged last week with solicitation of murder for allegedly offering more than one person money in exchange for killing Gentz before his next court hearing.
Prosecutors say Bashara delivered $2,000 to an informant who offered to kill Gentz for him.
“Joe was his slave, Joe would do what he was told,” Lady Giana said on the show. “If Bob was doing any type of demonstration he would probably use Joe as his slave. He would be tying up Joe, flogging him, whipping him, bisexual activity could be going on.
“… He did do demonstrations of the whipping of Joe, bondage of Joe … He was his slave so he would serve Bob in any way, shape or form that he wanted … He could’ve been turned into his sex slave.”
She said this information was gleaned with discussion from 20 or more people she knows in the local S&M scene. “I got phone calls, people were telling me all of what was going on at the parties … and that Joe Gentz was definitely his slave and would do what Bob told him to do.”
Would Gentz kill for Bashara? Langton asked. “Yes,” Lady Giana said, adding, “Joe, intelligent-wise, he had to be told what to do … His mentality, he had to be told what to do.”
So why didn’t she tell his story as soon as Gentz was arrested?
“The information that I’ve gathered … I didn’t want to say it at the time until he was arrested … I was getting calls, threatening calls,” Lady Giana said. “They did participate in the slave parties together and Bob was the master, Joe being his slave. Joe would do whatever master Bob would tell him to do.”
She said many told her they saw Gentz, who rented from Bashara and reportedly served as his handyman, at the sex dungeon. And she believes Gentz and Bashara may have had some kind of written contract, which is how slaves and masters generally assure their relationship.
“Literally slave contracts are made, with ownership,” she said. “I’m sure maybe when the police dig around a little more they’ll probably find a contract of some sort with Joe.”
Lady Giana knows Bashara and his sex dungeon friends, she said, because he tried to hire her to host parties at his S&M club. She said she knew him only as “Master Bob.”
“It was a complete S&M show underneath his bar,” she said about the Hard Luck Lounge, now closed, that Bashara owned in Grosse Pointe Park.

Was Joe Gentz Bob Bashara's Sex Slave?
July 2nd, 2012, 10:54 AM
Things of this crazy nature have to be digested with a dose of healthy skepticism.
Nonetheless, Dominatrix Lady Giana who initially disclosed Bob Bashara's sex dungeon and his kinky ways, suggested on the Charlie Langton Talk Radio 1270 show today that handyman Joseph Gentz may have been Bob Bashara's sex slave.
She said Gentz, who is accused of killing Bashara's wife Jane, would do anything Bashara asked.
Lady Giana said she based her statements on discussions with 20 or more people she knows in the local S&M scene.
“I got phone calls, people were telling me all of what was going on at the parties … and that Joe Gentz was definitely his slave and would do what Bob told him to do," she said on the show.
Bashara is behind bars. He's charged with putting a hit out on Gentz. Bashara has not been charged in his wife's murder, though he remains a suspect.

Re: Jane Bashara Murder (thread #3)
Dominatrix claims in radio interview Bob Bashara and Joe Gentz had affair
Published: Monday, July 02, 2012
By MITCH HOTTS
For The Oakland Press
A Detroit-area dominatrix on Monday called a radio talk show to claim Bob Bashara had a “master-slave” sex relationship with the man accused of killing his wife, Mount Clemens native Jane Bashara.
Lady Geanna, who revealed Bashara’s ties to an alleged sex dungeon and sadomasochist lifestyle, told the Charlie Langton show on WXYT-AM (1270) that handyman Joe Gentz was Bob Bashara’s personal sex slave, who willingly did whatever Bashara told him to do, and the two had a written contract that spelled out the dynamics of their relationship, which involved “extensive role playing.”
“(Joe) would serve Bob in any way, shape or form that Bob wanted,” she said, according to the station’s website recording of her comments.
Asked by Langton whether Gentz would kill for Bashara, Lady Geanna said yes because Gentz — who court records say has emotional and psychological issues — did whatever he was told to do.
...
Bashara’s attorney said the dominatrix lacks credibility and is seeking media attention for financial reasons to talk about her “few seconds of fame.” He said Bashara has never met her and offered to take a polygraph exam to prove it.
“Bob Bashara doesn’t even know her yet she keeps managing to push her way in front of reporters and microphones and the end result is she’s making more money now than she ever has in her career,” Griem said. “Pretty soon only the National Enquirer is going to be reporting on this, that’s the depth we’ve sunk to on this case, which can only be described as the theater of the absurd.”
This past February, Lady Geanna told the radio station about the S&M dungeon located in the basement behind the Hard Luck Lounge on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Park. A few days later, the bar closed and the dungeon equipment was moved out.
Lady Geanna told the station on Monday that her information on the relationship between Bob Bashara and Gentz was based on discussions she has had with close to two dozen people in the underground S&M scene. She said Bashara would sometimes use Gentz in bondage demonstrations at slave parties.
She also said she’s received numerous threatening phone calls for publicly talking about Bashara.
Langton, a Sterling Heights attorney who hosts the morning radio talk show, said he believes the dominatrix is credible based on her past comments that turned out to be true.
“But from a legal standpoint, everything she said today should be viewed as hearsay,” he said.
“I think she does have a sense of what’s going on in the S&M industry. And I think it’s common knowledge that Bashara had at least one girlfriend, so if he was into the S&M or swingers scene, a master-slave relationship with Joe Gentz fits the mold.”

Lawyers dismiss sex-slave talk between Bob Bashara and Joe Gentz

Wayne
GROSSE POINTE PARK
Defense attorney Susan Reed said Monday that she knows of nothing to support speculation on a morning radio talk show that her client Joe Gentz was in a subservient relationship with Bob Bashara, whose wife Jane Bashara was killed in January.
"I have no information that tells me that Joseph Gentz was Bob Bashara's sex slave," Reed said.
Dominatrix Lady Geanna, who first exposed Bashara's alleged sex dungeon in Grosse Pointe Park, called the Charlie Langton Talk Radio 1270 show Monday, saying she received reports the two men were in a slave-master relationship.
The speculation is just the latest turn in the bizarre murder case. Gentz is charged with killing Jane Bashara in January after he told police he did so at her husband's behest. Last week, Bashara was arrested on charges of allegedly trying to hire a hit man to kill Gentz.
"Just when you think can't get more absurd, something like this comes along," Bashara's attorney David Griem said. "There's absolutely no truth to this."
Bashara has not been charged with his wife's death but has been called a person of interest and termed a suspect in court hearings.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -
A local dominatrix says the man charged in the murder of a Grosse Pointe woman was more than just an alleged hitman.
She goes by the name of Lady Geanna and she tells FOX 2 that dozens of S&M insiders say they've seen it first-hand and are convinced that Joe Gentz was Bob Bashara's sex slave.
"Bob would have a show. He would charge fees. There would be a show and Joe would be the one being worked over," says Lady Geanna. "He was whipping him, flogging him, candle wax poured on him."
Lady Geanna admits she's never actually seen the alleged sexual activities involving Bashara and Gentz and she's only spoken with Bashara once over the phone. But, she's sticking to her story. "I knew it all along that that's what was going on."
Bashara is accused of hiring Gentz earlier this year to kill his wife Jane. Now, he's behind bars for allegedly hiring another hitman to kill Gentz.
An attorney for Bashara did not return FOX 2's calls but has said the dominatrix is just trying to get a few seconds of fame.

WHO KILLED JANE BASHARA? VIOLENT CRIME IN THE BURBS
By John Freeman
27June
2012
The ongoing violent crime saga of who killed Jane Bashara, the deceased wife of Bob Bashara, took a very strange turn yesterday. Authorities say they have Bob Bashara on tape offering $2,000 to a hit man to kill Joseph Gentz, the man Bob Bashara allegedly hired to kill Jane Bashara. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy stated that Bashara had numerous meetings with several different individuals between June 8 and June 25 regarding killing Gentz as he waits in jail before his trial on July 23. Bashara is expected to be arraigned today in 36th District Court in Detroit. Worthy stated in a press conference earlier today that Bashara was being charged with one count of solicitation to murder.
Bashara was originally named a person of interest in the death of his wife after she was found dead in her SUV on January 25. Jane Bashara's body was found strangled, beaten, and missing four of her fingernails. After an extensive investigation, police arrested Gentz and charged him with the murder. At the time of his arrest, Gentz told police that Bashara promised him approximately $2,000 and a used Cadillac. Gentz now claims that Bashara forced him at gunpoint to kill Jane Bashara inside the Bashara's home. He is awaiting trial on a charge of first-degree murder and another charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
If he is found guilty, Bashara can face up to life in prison. Rumors began circulating that a hit had been put out on Gentz months ago, but nothing came of it. Guards at the William Dickerson correctional facility, where Gentz is being held, were keeping a close watch on him even before the rumors began. Questions about why Bashara believed he could find someone with close enough access to Gentz to be able to kill him have yet to be answered. Although never charged, these new facts give rise to more questions about Bashara's involvement in the death of his wife.

The Bashara case at a glance
July 8, 2012
Here is a time line of events in the slaying of Jane Bashara of Grosse Pointe Park.
Jan. 24: Bob Bashara reports his wife, Jane Bashara, missing.
Jan. 25: A tow truck driver finds Jane Bashara's body in her SUV on Detroit's east side. She was strangled.
Jan. 27: Police call Bob Bashara a person of interest in his wife's death after he fails a polygraph examination. Jan. 31: Joseph Gentz walks into the Grosse Pointe Park Department of Public Safety, where, during an interview with police, he says he killed Jane Bashara at her husband's behest.
Feb. 3: Gentz is released from custody without being charged.
Feb. 4: Bob Bashara tells reporters: "I did not kill my wife."
March 2: Gentz is arrested.
March 5: Gentz is arraigned on first-degree murder and conspiracy charges.
March 9: The Free Press reports that the clothing Jane Bashara was wearing when her body was found never made it to the State Police crime lab for testing. Police say that day that some clothing was sent, but State Police officials stand by their statement that clothing she was wearing was never received for testing.
April 26: Rachel Gillett, Bashara's former mistress, files a personal protection order, saying he had harassed her.
May 9: In a court filing, Bashara denies stalking Gillett.
June 11: A court-ordered psychiatric evaluation finds Gentz competent to stand trial. Attorneys for both sides indicate he will undergo a second, independent evaluation before plea bargaining begins.
June 25: Bashara is arrested and is accused of attempting to have Gentz killed.
June 27: Bashara is arraigned on a charge of solicitation for murder.

Re: Jane Bashara Murder (thread #3)
New charges in Bob Bashara case a gift to prosecutors
July 8, 2012
By Joe Swickard and Gina Damron
Detroit Free Press Staff Writers
Joseph Gentz said Bob Bashara, above, had him kill his wife. Now, Bashara is accused of putting a hit out on Gentz. / Brian Kaufman/Detroit Free Press
Bob Bashara's alleged scheme to put a hit out on Joseph Gentz could be a huge evidentiary hammer for prosecutors trying to nail him for the January slaying of his wife, according to trial attorneys and other legal experts.
For more than five months, Bashara has been labeled a person of interest but was never charged in his wife's death. Legal experts say it's a difficult case marred by problems such as Gentz's reliability as a witness and the fact that articles of Jane Bashara's clothing were never analyzed for evidence.
But Bashara's arrest on a charge of attempting to have Gentz killed could be a legal game-changer in his wife's slaying, experts say.
If prosecutors charge Bashara with killing his 56-year-old wife, experts say, they'll be able to introduce any evidence in that case that shows Bashara tried to have Gentz killed.
Wayne County prosecutors aren't saying what their next move may be, but they have said Bashara tried to have Gentz killed to prevent him from testifying.
It's unclear how damning that testimony could be. Gentz told authorities he killed Jane Bashara at her husband's behest, but he could be vulnerable to cross-examination because of his mental and intellectual challenges, not to mention the multiple accounts he gave to police about what happened.
Bashara's arrest last month on a charge of solicitation to murder Gentz was just the latest whipsaw move in a case that has seen Bashara's image go from respected Grosse Pointe Park community volunteer to scorned outcast who has been heckled, kicked out of a church fund-raiser and asked not to patronize a popular restaurant because his presence was bad for business, residents and his attorney say.
"This case is like a Dickens novel without the London fog," said University of Michigan law professor Len Niehoff, who noted that the alleged hit on Gentz could be used against Bashara if he is charged with his wife's murder.
The second purported murder-for-hire plot may have other potential implications, experts say.
Among the possible scenarios: Prosecutors might not need to cut a deal with Gentz to testify anymore, and could put the potential murder charge on hold while they go after Bashara on the solicitation charge, which carries a possible life sentence.
Bashara's lawyer David Griem said the strange twists keep coming: "Just when you think it can't get any more absurd, something like this comes along."
Bad news for Gentz
Unlike Hollywood courtrooms, Michigan criminal cases don't automatically collapse if a witness turns up missing or dead.
The attempt to get at a witness can be used as evidence against a defendant, just as trying to flee police can be used to show what the law calls the "consciousness of guilt," Niehoff said.
Prosecutors could try to get details of the alleged hit on Gentz admitted in a case against Bashara in his wife's slaying as a "similar act." It could show common characteristics between the alleged hit on Gentz and the alleged hit on Jane Bashara.
The prosecution and Gentz's lawyer won't go into details, but it is widely believed that Gentz would testify against Bashara.
Gentz's lawyer Susan Reed wouldn't talk about any negotiations, but said it's highly unlikely Gentz and Bashara would sit together as co-defendants.
"Don't you think that would be a little antagonistic?" she said.
Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, also declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation into Jane Bashara's death and the Gentz and Bashara cases.
However, in charging Bashara with solicitation, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Bashara sought a hit man in an attempt to quiet Gentz from testifying against him.
Bashara, who was arrested June 25, is accused of paying a man -- who wore a wire so authorities could record their conversations -- to orchestrate Gentz's murder in the William Dickerson Detention Facility in Hamtramck.
It remains to be seen how realistic the threat against Gentz was, given that access is limited because he is not in the general jail population.
Gentz is being held on murder and conspiracy charges and has already been found mentally competent for trial by a state psychological examination. Results from an independent evaluation are to be presented at a July 23 hearing in Detroit 36th District Court.
Todd Flood, a defense lawyer and former assistant Wayne County prosecutor, said the alleged plot against Gentz changes the dynamic of the murder case.
"Before, it would have been all about Joe and his credibility if he testified against Bashara," he said. "Now, prosecutors may not need him."
Griem said the prospect of Gentz being unnecessary to prosecutors "makes Susan Reed and Joe the two saddest people in town," because they've lost a lot of their leverage for a plea bargain.
Flood and other attorneys said the murder cases could take a backseat to the solicitation charge. The solicitation could be easier to prove, and a delay wouldn't harm the murder case because there is no statute of limitation, they said.
The outcast
The community dynamics also have changed.
Before his wife was killed Jan. 24, Bob Bashara appeared to be an exemplary resident of the swank lakefront suburb of Grosse Pointe Park.
The 54-year-old, who grew up in the area, was once the Rotary Club president, served as an assistant Boy Scout troop leader, was on multiple parent-teacher organization committees and was a prolific fund-raiser.
That quickly changed when word got out about Gentz's claims that he was Bashara's hit man, tales of an underground sex life and the recent purported murder plot.
"Nothing is the same or can be the same in his life as a result of all that's gone on here," Grosse Pointe Park Mayor Pro Tem Greg Theokas said.
Bashara was still spotted all over town after his wife's death -- driving, attending sporting events, including a swim meet, taking in a movie at a city theater, dining and playing cards at local restaurants.
But despite his attempts to blend in, Bashara became an outcast.
"Being ostracized is about as harsh a penalty as someone can impose on you," Griem said.
Bashara and his mother attended St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Grosse Pointe Woods, but Griem said the reception at church seemed chilly.
"There's a strong feeling that they're not welcome there," he said.
Bashara got the cold shoulder all over, according to news media reports and chatter at Pointers' backyard barbeques and cocktail parties, where "Bob sightings" were shared and dissected.
Bashara was asked to leave the annual St. Joan of Arc Spring Festival in St. Clair Shores in May after offering to volunteer, according to news accounts. The news accounts said Msgr. G. Michael Bugarin asked Bashara to leave, but Bugarin declined to discuss it Tuesday.
"Everything I've needed to say, I've already said," he said.
Residents also say Bashara was spotted at the movie theater at Windmill Pointe Park, where he was reportedly heckled, and at local sporting events, including a swim meet at the park.
Griem said Bashara was asked not to return as a customer to Dylan's Raw Bar & Grill -- one of his tenants in a property he owns on Mack Avenue.
"The bar owner felt that it hurt their business to have him be seen there," Griem said. The owner declined to comment when reached Friday.
Sunrise Sunset Saloon manager Maureen Moore said she waited on Bashara and his former girlfriend at the bar on Charlevoix before Jane Bashara's death. It was the same woman said to be his partner in a kinky sex dungeon in the basement of one of his commercial buildings.
In the days following his wife's murder, Bob Bashara sometimes played euchre at Sunrise Sunset, but he eventually stopped going because his presence unnerved other patrons, Moore said.
Griem said he had told his client to keep a normal routine. He said Bashara's public appearances were understandable.
"In a situation where I believed I was being unfairly treated and felt that I was being bullied, I think I would react the same way," he said. "I think if I ... just withdrew and stayed away, I would have a hard time looking at myself in the mirror when I shaved in the morning."
Can he get a fair trial?
The public behavior may have been bravado.
Prosecutors said Bashara was growing anxious about Gentz some day testifying against him and went looking for someone to put a hit out on Gentz.
Bashara is accused of approaching a local business owner -- a man who has not returned several messages left by the Free Press -- about the murder plot. Sources have said the man wore a wire and authorities taped their conversation, which purportedly included negotiating the price.
The man approached by Bashara reportedly owns a furniture and appliance store on Detroit's east side and, according to Wayne County Property tax records, several other properties.
Griem said Bashara, who owns several properties, has long had business dealings with the man and purchased appliances from him for his rentals.
Sources told the Free Press that Bashara thought the man, who he gave a $2,000 down payment, had the means to orchestrate a hit-for-hire plot, possibly because of his associations.
Given that the case is high profile and because of information that has leaked out, Griem questions whether Bashara can receive a fair trial.
Griem said his client believes "the truth will be triumphant," but Griem worries that leaks have tainted the jury pool.
"We could have God come down and sit at the defense table, and we still couldn't win," Griem said. "I think that it's winnable if everybody in that jury box puts on blinders and only concentrates on the evidence that is admitted during the course of a trial, but how do we erase all of the damage that was done?"

Jane Bashara remembered as friend, volunteer, community booster
'Whatever she put her heart in, she put her full heart in'
By Francis X. Donnelly
The Detroit News
A month before she was killed, Jane Bashara was shopping in a drugstore when another customer tried to make a purchase with a welfare debit card. The sale didn't go through so Bashara, who didn't know the man, told the clerk to add his items to her bill, said the clerk, Debora Price. Typical Jane, said her friends.
If someone needed help, she didn't hesitate, they said. She was a whirlwind who threw herself into whatever she was doing — work, community service, raising a family or helping others.
A fixture in the Grosse Pointes, she invariably was the one in charge of a community project, bursting with ideas, happily encouraging cohorts with a constant smile.
"She was one of those people who could do it all," said Lori Bireta, 56, a longtime friend from Davison.
Bashara, a 56-year-old mother of two, was strangled in January. Two months later, handyman Joe Gentz was arrested after telling police he killed Bashara at her husband's behest.
In a bizarre twist in late June, husband Bob Bashara was charged with trying to hire someone to kill Gentz.
Expressing shock over the arrest of her husband, friends and family of Jane Bashara also talked about their memories of a woman who was so active she didn't belong to just one book club but three.
Whether making a new resident feel welcome or leading a campaign to retain a school millage, she leaped into the task.
"She fit a lot into every day," said a sister, Janet Gottsleben, 55, of Clinton Township. "Her calendars were full."
People had been drawn to Bashara her whole life, said friends.
Her smile never seemed to wane. When talking to someone, she was so immersed in what they were saying that she made them feel like the most important person in the world.
It's telling that, during interviews and comments on blogs since Bashara's death, several people labeled themselves her best friend.
They clicked right away
When Bashara was a student at Central Michigan University in the 1970s, one of her girlfriends received a prank call from a boy in the middle of the night. The girlfriend and boy began talking, hit it off and agreed to meet the next day.
Bashara was so worried about her friend meeting a stranger that, during the get-together, she hid around a corner in the dorm lounge. The friend, Ruann Marshall, who eventually married the boy, didn't know Bashara was watching over her until she told her later. "Whatever she did she embraced fully," said Marshall, 56, of Chesterfield Township. "Whatever she put her heart in she put her full heart in."
Bashara, a good student and athlete, studied business administration at Central Michigan and then University of Detroit Mercy. Around the time she received her master's from Detroit Mercy in 1983, she met Bob Bashara.
The two clicked right away, Bob Bashara told "Dateline NBC" in May. He said he was attracted to her openness.
"She was outgoing, a go-getter," he said. "I just was attracted to her from the beginning."
For her part, she liked his affable nature and that he never was at a loss for words, said friends.
They were married within two years. Friends said they believed the 26-year marriage was a happy one. They were shocked by news reports, later confirmed by Bob Bashara, that he had a mistress.
He told a reporter that the couple had an open marriage, but his wife's siblings contested the point. They said in a statement that they doubted Jane Bashara would have stayed in such a marriage.
Most relatives, on both sides of the family, declined to be interviewed for this story.
In a recent court filing by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, Bob Bashara has been named a suspect in his wife's death. He has said repeatedly he had nothing to do with it.
A popular boss
One of the jobs Jane Bashara had while working for DTE Energy for 24 years was managing a 350-person call center.
She was a popular boss, said workers. They described her as personable, encouraging and generous with her time and praise.
After her death, testimonials from former employees filled a tribute page on a funeral home website.
"Jane always had a kind and encouraging word for everyone," wrote Peggy Willockx of Troy.
"She was so energetic buzzing around with a giant smile," wrote Rena Austin of Harper Woods.
She worked as hard in the community as on the job. At St. Michael's Episcopal Church, she was involved with the youth group. In the Grosse Pointe Park Little League, she and her husband started a concession stand in the late '90s that remains a major fundraiser today.
At Grosse Pointe South High School, she was an athletic booster, president of the band and athletic boosters, and head of the Mothers' Club, a parents group that raises money for scholarships and classroom expenses. During school events, she made sure volunteers felt appreciated. She circulated among them, asking about their children by name.
"She always had time for other people," said one of the volunteers, Jim Triano. "You liked volunteering because she was part of it."
If not working for the community, Jane Bashara was helping people individually.
When Triano's son wanted to transfer to Purdue University, Triano called Bashara because her son was a student there.
She spent hours telling the Trianos everything she knew about the school and walking them through the application process.
When the son was accepted, Bashara told him what he should do when he arrived on campus, what he should bring and places where he could live.
"It was like having a big brother," said Triano, 63, of Grosse Pointe Park. "She wanted him to know all the ins and outs." Even more remarkable, he said, was the fact that Bashara did all this for a casual acquaintance. "I might do that for my very best friend. We were someone she just knew," he said.
"But that's the way she was with everyone."

Jane Bashara: Her Smile And Generosity Never Seemed To Wane
July 9th, 2012, 7:02 AM
Jane Bashara's smile never seemed to wane.
Either did her generosity, Francis X. Donnelly of the Detroit News reports in a profile of Bashara, a woman who became a local household name after she was murdered and her husband Bob was named as a person of interest.
In one anecdote, the News reported that a month before her murder in January, Jane Bashara was at a drug store. When a person tried to charge something with a welfare credit card, and the sale didn't go through, she told the clerk that she'd pay for it.
Her husband has not been charged in her murder, but is locked up in the Wayne County Jail on charges that he tried to put a hit out on handyman Joe Gentz. Gentz claimed he killed Jane Bashara at the direction of her husband.
Free Press reporter Joe Swickard reported on Sunday that the alleged hit on Gentz could help authorities build a case against Bob Bashara in the murder of his wife.

Re: Jane Bashara Murder (thread #3)
Joe Gentz ruled competent to stand trial in Bashara case, paving way for deal talks
7:00 PM, July 9, 2012
By Joe Swickard
Free Press Staff Writer
A court-sanction independent evaluation found Joe Gentz, who told police he was hired by Bob Bashara to kill Bashara's wife, mentally competent to stand trial, defense attorney Susan Reed said today.
The finding echoes the results made by doctors at the state forensic center and clears the path for Reed to talk with prosecutors about a possible deal for Gentz.
Reed had refused to publicly discuss any possible deals as long as Gentz’s mental status — he has a reported IQ of 68 and emotional issues — was open to question.
“It was an issue that had to be put to rest,” Reed said. “That had to be answered before you can legitimately and legally start negotiations.”
Bob Bashara’s lawyer David Griem, who had long predicted Gentz would be lined up with prosecutors, feigned surprise.
“What shock,” Griem said.
“This whole thing has been a charade,” he said. “Those negotiations started months ago. I guess this is just some dramatic license for some lawyers.”
Griem said the two evaluations were choreographed and are the latest manifestation of the “unholy alliance” of Reed and prosecutors: “It’s all part of a long list of abuses starting with the investigative subpoenas and all the police leaks.”
Griem and Reed have been at odds for most of the investigation. She has asked for Griem to be held in contempt of court for issuing unauthorized subpoenas to gather evidence about her client.
Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office, declined comment but said the office’s attorneys will be in Detroit 36th District on Wednesday afternoon.
Gentz told Grosse Pointe Park police soon after Jane Bashara’s body was found Jan. 25 in her Mercedes Benz SUV ditched in an eastside Detroit alley that he killed the marketing executive at her husband’s direction. He gave varying accounts of the killing, including saying he crushed Jane Barasha neck with his foot because Bob Bashara had him at gunpoint.
A mentally incompetent witness would be of no value in a trial. Griem said Gentz’s worth as a witness has plummeted since his client was arrested for allegedly trying to hire a hit man to kill Gentz in jail.
Bashara has not been charged in connection with his wife’s slaying. He faces a possible life sentence for the alleged solicitation.

Bob Bashara: The library and the ladies
Author: Hank Winchester, Local 4 Reporter

-- Bob Bashara was arraigned June 27 on charges he tried to have a suspect in his wife's murder killed.
---- TEXT & VIDEO (2:57) ----
They are women who allegedly helped Bob Bashara explore his interest in S & M - former mistresses and who knew Bashara as Master Bob.
"Until I heard about the murder of Jane Bashara, I had never known Bob’s last name. Then the husband got on and I knew right away that was Master Bob."
Now these women have become part of the ongoing police investigation into the murder of Bashara’s wife Jane. Their wild stories are helping police lean more about Bashara.
"He just simply explained to us that he lived in the Pointes and that he does have a fully outfitted dungeon."
The Local 4 Defenders have learned Bashara reached out to these women several times recently via email. Even though their identities were concealed Bashara tracked them down and within the last two months was sending emails working to figure out who was talking with the media and what were these women telling police.
All this played out around the same time police say Bashara was allegedly working to find a hitman to kill handyman Joe Gentz. Those meetings took place behind a building he owed in Grosse Pointe Park. The emails, we're told, were sent from inside a local library.

Now these women have become part of the ongoing police investigation into the murder of Bashara’s wife Jane. Their wild stories are helping police lean more about Bashara.

I saw Bob's Mom tonight, she was on a walk with a female companion. She looked terrible. She's still in Bob and Jane's house. I swear she looks like she aged 25 years. I felt bad for her. I can't imagine the pain for both families. Just awful.
