Bob's father's Obituary...
Judge George N. Bashara
Died: Monday, April 08, 2002
Peacemaker ... this one word, more than any other, describes Judge George Nayf Bashara, who died at the age of 67 in his Grosse Pointe Shores home on Monday, April 8, 2002. Noted throughout the state and the country as a superb mediator and arbitrator, Judge Bashara spent his entire life bringing people together, as well as helping them to bring out the best in themselves.
He refused to suffer quarrels and unreasoned disagreement, instead using all of his skills to concentrate combatants on compromise and win-win situations. In every area of his life and his work, he extended a supreme effort to heal, to make things work and to make things better.
A gentle man who shared his strength and convictions with any who cared to partake of them, George Bashara also was a man of faith, patience, humor and warmth. His ability to bring order out of chaos was accomplished with grace and wit.
From his father, an accomplished attorney and speaker, Judge Bashara learned the art of rhetoric. As a teenager, he accompanied his neighbor, the late disc jockey and raconteur Toby David, to work on many summer mornings. It was there that he began to accumulate the lexicon of stories, accents and jokes for which he was noted. Always in demand as a master of ceremonies, he as easily could have become an entertainer as a lawyer, but for his desire to walk in the impressive footsteps of his father.
After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1956 with an A. B., he went on to the Detroit College of Law, receiving his LL.D. in 1960. After several years in legal partnership with his father, he became a member and then chair of the Appeals Board of the Michigan Employment Security Commission. He was appointed to Probate Court by then-Governor William Milliken, later winning election and promotion to presiding judge. In 1972 he became, at 38, the youngest judge to sit on the bench of the Michigan Court of Appeals.
When he sat on the probate bench, Judge Bashara originated a program wherein middle school students attended his courtroom on "Drug Day," to observe the terrible tragedies of narcotics involvement. The youngsters also visited the Wayne County jail. He then traveled to schools with recovering abusers to meet with students who had attended a Drug Day program and conduct a discussion on what had transpired.
After leaving the bench and spending several years as vice president, secretary and general counsel for Federal Mogul Corp., he returned to private practice, first with Dykema, Gossett and then with Clark Hill.
George Bashara is mourned by his wife Suzanne; his son Robert (Jane) Bashara; his daughter Laura (Kent) Maurer; his stepson Scott Simon; his stepdaughter Meribeth (Bob) Meyers; his grandchildren Robert Jr., Jessica, Andy, Cody and Violet and his sisters Gwenn Samuel, Judith (Steve) Pleva and Carol (Tobias) George. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara (Manfred) Elfers.
Equally important was his relationship with his church. He had been senior warden and, for many years up until his death, was chancellor of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Grosse Pointe Woods. It was there that he could be found assisting with communion on most Sundays.
George Bashara served his community well. His reasoned voice contributed to the original board of New Detroit, Inc., and he was a past-president of the boards of trustees of both Wayne State University and Michigan State University/Detroit College of Law. He was a member of the board of trustees of St. John Hospital and Medical Center and of the Grosse Pointe Shores planning commission. He was the recipient of numerous awards from the Arab community as well as the Detroit Council of Christians and Jews. He was also a thirty-third degree Mason and past president of Lochmoor Club.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so on Thursday, April 18, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Friday, April 19, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., at A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe Woods. A funeral will be held on Friday, April 19, at 11 a.m., at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 20475 Sunningdale Park Dr., in Grosse Pointe Woods. Judge Bashara's ashes will be entombed in the columbarium of the church.
A George Bashara Memorial Fund has been established at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 20475 Sunningdale Park Dr., Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers.

Bob Bashara opened his home and his heart to NBC's Dateline Friday night, but the result was a tale of a Grosse Pointe Park sex dungeon for a national audience. What did he expect?
...Bashara has been defensive toward local media outlets, but he welcomed Dateline into his home, showing off the pond, burbling water and ferns in his backyard, and allowing the camera to capture him leafing through a book in the living room, next to a glass that carried the words “You’re the Man, Bob”.
people talking about the 'you're' the man bob cup... they were given to him by his family at a 'bob' store (everything about bob)... Pretty sure he has a bob shirt and clock and doormat too lol
YOU'RE THE MAN, BOB
