GROSSE POINTE PARK, MI (Tell Us Det) - The Grosse Pointe Memorial Church located just off the shores of Lake St. Claire reached capacity with mourners Tuesday, January 31 filling the sanctuary at the funeral service for Jane Bashara, a Grosse Pointe Park mother who was killed last week.

Attendees of the memorial said that husband Bob Bashara did not speak at the service. Instead, her sister, Julie Rowe, shared memories. Following the funeral, mourners gathered at Assumption Cultural Center in Saint Clair Shores for lunch.

Several plain-clothed and uniformed officers stood outside near the parking lots of both gatherings...

Slain Grosse Pointe Park woman was Mount Clemens High graduate

As the family of Jane Bashara gathers this morning to bid farewell to the wife and mother, her former friends and acquaintances in her native Mount Clemens recall her as a vibrant student-athlete who grew into a caring and compassionate woman.

Bashara, 56, was found Jan. 25 in her Mercedes-Benz in an alley near Moross and Hoover on Detroit’s east side, several miles from her Grosse Pointe Park home. Authorities have determined she was strangled.

“When I turned on the TV news and saw her picture on there, it just sucked the wind right out of me,” said Ruann Marshall, 56, of Chesterfield Township, who went to Mount Clemens High School with Bashara in the 1970s and remained close friends in the years after.

Marshall, whose father, John Heitchue once worked with Bashara and helped prepare a memory book for the funeral services, met her in a high school algebra class. The two ended up attending Central Michigan University together.

“She was just so much fun and so loving,” Marshall said Monday afternoon before leaving for the funeral home to pay her respects to Bashara’s family. “She had a little more brass than I did, so we were a perfect match. She attracted more attention with her laugh that everyone loved.”

Jane Bashara was known as Jane Engelbrecht while growing up in Mount Clemens, where she worked at Miller Brothers Creamery while attending school. The oldest of four siblings, she was known as a confident student at Mount Clemens High School, where she graduated in 1973.

While at the high school, she took part in a number of activities including the French Club, National Honor Society, and the girl’s tennis and volleyball teams, according to a school yearbook.

“She was exciting to be around because she had such a bright personality,” said Linda Petros, the school’s former volleyball coach and a Mount Clemens Community Schools retired principal and school board member, who was pictured in the yearbook with Bashara.

“Jane was a good athlete and a good student and I think everyone respected her, she had that kind of personality. Just a wonderful young woman.”

John MacArthur, a Mount Clemens attorney, agreed.
MacArthur, who graduated with Bashara, last saw her at a 25-year high school class reunion in 1998. He said the Engelbrecht family was well known and highly thought of in the Mount Clemens community.

“I remember that she was quite popular and outgoing,” MacArthur said. “It was like she was everybody’s friend. I’m sorry I didn’t get out to Grosse Pointe Park in recent years to spend more time with her and now this.”

From Mount Clemens, Bashara went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree from University of Detroit Mercy.

She was employed as senior marketing manager for KEMA Services in Detroit, an energy consulting, testing and certification company, according to her obituary. She also formerly worked for many years at Detroit Edison.

Grosse Pointe Park police have named her husband of 26 years, Robert Bashara, as a person of interest in her death. But those who have seen the couple together are skeptical that he would ever harm her.

Marshall, who moved overseas for a time with her family before returning to Michigan, said she and Bashara kept current on family happenings by sharing Christmas photos and letters, and getting together for “big family events” such as their children’s weddings.

“Bob was so good for her,” Marshall said. “They were so affectionate together, he was like her teddy bear. I certainly hope he wasn’t involved, especially for the children. If he was, it would be devastating.”

Jane Bashara is survived by her husband, Robert; son, Robert Jr.; daughter, Jessica; sisters, Janet Gottsleben and Julie Rowe; brother, John Engelbrecht; and parents, John and Lorraine Engelbrecht.

Memorial contributions may be addressed to St. Michael Episcopal Church Organ Fund, 20475 Sunningdale, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236, or Grosse Pointe Rotary Club, P.O. Box 36366 Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236.

Remembering Grosse Pointer Jane Bashara

Jane Bashara's leadership skills began when she was a child and continued into adulthood.

By Sara Eaton Martin, the author, January 30, 2012

Jane Bashara was a leader even as a child. She was the oldest of four children and remained close with her siblings as an adult, her youngest sister Julie Rowe said.

"She was an amazing person," Rowe said. "She was a leader. She was a mentor to everyone. Those same qualities (her friends) speak of she showed when she was young."

Her friends in the Grosse Pointes described her as selfless and supportive.

Amy Graham, a friend of Bashara's who organized the candlelight vigil on the front lawn of Grosse Pointe South last week, said she first got to know Bashara years ago when other people were not necssarily friendly with her.

The pair grew close and Bashara was a constant source of encouragement to Graham. When Graham began having children, Bashara's children were already beyond elementary school, and Bashara was constantly encouraging Graham about how she could be involved with volunteering and have young children, Graham said, saying that was just one of many examples.

She was also supportive to anyone she encountered, Graham and another friend Lois Valente said. Bashara had recently opened her home to Valente for fundraising in her campaign for school board, Valente said.

The Bashara's home was always full of young people, Graham said, noting Bashara's children and their friends were always at the house. Both of Bashara's children are now young adults.

Her son Rob is an industrial engineer and lives out of state. Her daughter Jessica is a sophomore at University of Michigan.

Her children and family always came first, her sister said, noting how she was successful in her professional life and personal life.

"Life was a hobby. She was always the planner," Rowe said. "She was so committed."

Bashara most recently worked as a marketing manager for Kema Services in downtown Detroit, which is an energy consultation company. She worked for Detroit Edison for 25 years and did work for Frontier 3 in the Park for several years.

Bashara often vacationed with her siblings as families and she often went to see Rowe, who lives in Chattanooga, TN. Bashara had a trip to visit Rowe scheduled for next weekend, Rowe said.

Bashara attended Mt. Clemens High School, had a bachelor's in Business Administration from Central Michigan University and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy.

A visitation service has been scheduled for Monday, Jan. 30 from 3 to 9 p.m. at A. H. Peters Funeral Home at Mack Avenue and Vernier Road. A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church on Lake Shore Road.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, who is well-known in the community as well. He is the past president of the Grosse Pointe Rotary Club.

According to the obituary posted on the funeral home website, Bashara is also survived by her parents, John and Lorraine Engelbrecht and siblings Janet, Julie and John.

Family is requesting memorials to either St. Michael Episcopal Church Organ Fund in Grosse Pointe Woods or to the Grosse Pointe Rotary, P.O. Box 36366, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236.

Friends, family stunned by death of Grosse Pointe Park woman

by LAURA on FEBRUARY 7, 2012

This story by Laura Phelps and George Hunter first appeared in The Detroit News on Jan. 26, 2012.

Grosse Pointe Park— Friends and family are baffled how a 56-year-old Grosse Pointe Park marketing executive wound up dead in her vehicle in an east side alley Wednesday.

“The fact that someone would do this just blows my mind,” said Nancy Bashara, mother-in-law of Jane Bashara. “She’ll be missed … She was a wonderful person.”

Jane Bashara, who was reported missing to Grosse Pointe Park police Tuesday night, was found by Detroit police about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Her body was found in her Mercedes-Benz in an alley near Pinewood and Annotte streets on the city’s east side. “The cause of death is unknown at this point,” said Detroit Police spokeswoman Yvette Walker.

Bashara, a longtime Metro Detroit advertising and marketing executive, most recently worked as a senior marketing manager at KEMA Services, an energy consulting, testing and certification company based in the Netherlands.

“She was a fantastic employee,” said Susan Erwin, the company’s director of marketing. “I’m based in our Oakland (Calif.) office, but I knew Jane personally. She was a close friend to a lot of people.

“We’re shocked and saddened by her death, and we’re doing everything we can to support her family and help the police with the investigation.”

Bashara was married to Bob Bashara, former president of the Grosse Pointe Rotary Club. She had two children: Jessica, a student at the University of Michigan, and Rob, an engineer for GE in Iowa.

News of her death prompted more than 100 people to gather in front of Grosse Pointe South High School for an impromptu vigil Wednesday night.

Cradling candles in the chilly dark, they prayed and somberly sang “Amazing Grace.”

A community member shared memories of how Bashara tried to get parents involved with homecoming preparations at the school.

Her husband, appearing grief-stricken, embraced a number of mourners but did not speak during the event.

He declined to speak with reporters.

His mother, Nancy, said her daughter-in-law “was the type of person that got involved in everything” — including her children’s sports activities.

“She loved her family,” she said.

Also drawn to the vigil was Lois Valente, a friend for more than 25 years. She said although Bashara was career-driven and devoted to her job, nothing came ahead of her family and friends.

“You couldn’t find a better person than Jane,” she said.

Bashara is the second Grosse Pointe Park resident to be found dead in Detroit recently.

The body of James Scott Ivers, 46, was discovered in a wooded area on Belle Isle last week. His damaged car was nearby. His cause of death is also unknown. An autopsy is being conducted.

Jane Bashara remembered as friend, volunteer, community booster

'Whatever she put her heart in, she put her full heart in'

By Francis X. Donnelly
The Detroit News
Jane's Memorial Info, Jane's Photos ... etc Bilde?Site=C3&Date=20120709&Category=METRO01&ArtNo=207090348&Ref=AR&MaxW=525&Border=0&Jane-Bashara-remembered-friend-volunteer-community-booster

A month before she was killed, Jane Bashara was shopping in a drugstore when another customer tried to make a purchase with a welfare debit card. The sale didn't go through so Bashara, who didn't know the man, told the clerk to add his items to her bill, said the clerk, Debora Price. Typical Jane, said her friends.

If someone needed help, she didn't hesitate, they said. She was a whirlwind who threw herself into whatever she was doing — work, community service, raising a family or helping others.

A fixture in the Grosse Pointes, she invariably was the one in charge of a community project, bursting with ideas, happily encouraging cohorts with a constant smile.

"She was one of those people who could do it all," said Lori Bireta, 56, a longtime friend from Davison.

Bashara, a 56-year-old mother of two, was strangled in January. Two months later, handyman Joe Gentz was arrested after telling police he killed Bashara at her husband's behest.

In a bizarre twist in late June, husband Bob Bashara was charged with trying to hire someone to kill Gentz.

Expressing shock over the arrest of her husband, friends and family of Jane Bashara also talked about their memories of a woman who was so active she didn't belong to just one book club but three.

Whether making a new resident feel welcome or leading a campaign to retain a school millage, she leaped into the task.

"She fit a lot into every day," said a sister, Janet Gottsleben, 55, of Clinton Township. "Her calendars were full."

People had been drawn to Bashara her whole life, said friends.

Her smile never seemed to wane. When talking to someone, she was so immersed in what they were saying that she made them feel like the most important person in the world.

It's telling that, during interviews and comments on blogs since Bashara's death, several people labeled themselves her best friend.

They clicked right away

When Bashara was a student at Central Michigan University in the 1970s, one of her girlfriends received a prank call from a boy in the middle of the night. The girlfriend and boy began talking, hit it off and agreed to meet the next day.

Bashara was so worried about her friend meeting a stranger that, during the get-together, she hid around a corner in the dorm lounge. The friend, Ruann Marshall, who eventually married the boy, didn't know Bashara was watching over her until she told her later. "Whatever she did she embraced fully," said Marshall, 56, of Chesterfield Township. "Whatever she put her heart in she put her full heart in."

Bashara, a good student and athlete, studied business administration at Central Michigan and then University of Detroit Mercy. Around the time she received her master's from Detroit Mercy in 1983, she met Bob Bashara.

Jane's Memorial Info, Jane's Photos ... etc Bilde?Site=C3&Date=20120709&Category=METRO01&ArtNo=207090348&Ref=V2&MaxW=300&Border=0

The two clicked right away, Bob Bashara told "Dateline NBC" in May. He said he was attracted to her openness.

"She was outgoing, a go-getter," he said. "I just was attracted to her from the beginning."

For her part, she liked his affable nature and that he never was at a loss for words, said friends.

They were married within two years. Friends said they believed the 26-year marriage was a happy one. They were shocked by news reports, later confirmed by Bob Bashara, that he had a mistress.

He told a reporter that the couple had an open marriage, but his wife's siblings contested the point. They said in a statement that they doubted Jane Bashara would have stayed in such a marriage.

Most relatives, on both sides of the family, declined to be interviewed for this story.

In a recent court filing by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, Bob Bashara has been named a suspect in his wife's death. He has said repeatedly he had nothing to do with it.

A popular boss

One of the jobs Jane Bashara had while working for DTE Energy for 24 years was managing a 350-person call center.

She was a popular boss, said workers. They described her as personable, encouraging and generous with her time and praise.

After her death, testimonials from former employees filled a tribute page on a funeral home website.

"Jane always had a kind and encouraging word for everyone," wrote Peggy Willockx of Troy.

"She was so energetic buzzing around with a giant smile," wrote Rena Austin of Harper Woods.

She worked as hard in the community as on the job. At St. Michael's Episcopal Church, she was involved with the youth group. In the Grosse Pointe Park Little League, she and her husband started a concession stand in the late '90s that remains a major fundraiser today.

At Grosse Pointe South High School, she was an athletic booster, president of the band and athletic boosters, and head of the Mothers' Club, a parents group that raises money for scholarships and classroom expenses. During school events, she made sure volunteers felt appreciated. She circulated among them, asking about their children by name.

"She always had time for other people," said one of the volunteers, Jim Triano. "You liked volunteering because she was part of it."

If not working for the community, Jane Bashara was helping people individually.

When Triano's son wanted to transfer to Purdue University, Triano called Bashara because her son was a student there.

She spent hours telling the Trianos everything she knew about the school and walking them through the application process.

When the son was accepted, Bashara told him what he should do when he arrived on campus, what he should bring and places where he could live.

"It was like having a big brother," said Triano, 63, of Grosse Pointe Park. "She wanted him to know all the ins and outs." Even more remarkable, he said, was the fact that Bashara did all this for a casual acquaintance. "I might do that for my very best friend. We were someone she just knew," he said.

"But that's the way she was with everyone."
